Credo by Nancy Yeang

The results of the Nov. 2016 elections gave me a strange uncertainty that I couldn’t shake. My fears and disbelief surged passive aggressively via online platforms. I wanted to place my ideas somewhere other than social media, because my ideas were still invading my thoughts throughout the day. Also, the spur of the moment Tweets weren’t polishing my thoughts enough for me to move away from them.

A few days after the election, I read “Credo” by Neil Gaiman.

Gaiman’s "Credo" set something off in me. I directed that energy to create this online portfolio to collect my words. I wanted to develop the blogging function as a way to record my meandering thoughts to spark conversations and also to hopefully influence the thoughts of others.

In looking back through my portfolio, I realized that my weakness in my writing discipline was because I didn’t have my own creed to follow. That I didn’t give myself a set of rules to follow to stay aligned with why I write. I was content with writing for the sake of another person’s ideas and putting words to their creations because I was racing to find a way to get paid for my creativity – the ultimate freelancer struggle.

I write because I believe that my writing will make the most impact in the world after I die. That my ideas and my stories have value, and that I am the only person who can put the words to my ideas and my stories.

And here I am. I'm not writing on someone else's ideas or pitches, but I will write to give life to my ideas and for what I believe in.
